Get Organized – Tips from a Pro!

A professional organizer’s #1 goal is to help people take control of their space and time. Recently I asked Jennifer Schreiber from Ulitmately Organized to give us some tips.

I find that the most common problem people have nowadays is freeing up their space and letting go of things from their past that seem to grow as time goes on. People feel that by holding on to these items, they are holding on to their “memories”. This is a misconception. Memories are held in your head and heart and no one can take those away from you.

Where should I start?
If you have found yourself in a place where your “memories” have taken over your house, and you are ready to take back control, I find the best place to start is a room that you would love to see as a place of solace. Then start with one small area of that room and work from there. The trick is asking yourself “Do I really need this? Will I ever really have time to put that project together?”

But you have to be honest with yourself. If you truly are honest, chances are, you DON’T need it and you WON’T have the time. Once you conquer these questions, you will find that you have an abundance of items that can be given to a charity or a new home or even the good old file 13 (the trash).

Organizing your home can really be one of the least expensive projects in your house to take on. A lot of it is simply “letting go.” Once you are able to do that, the rest is easy.

Anything I need to buy?
The greatest thing about organizing your life is that it is a reasonably inexpensive endeavor with a lasting sense of accomplishment as the reward. The one thing that I feel everyone needs to spend a few dollars investing in, especially if you have a pile of unsorted papers, is file folders. With a simple filing system, anyone would be amazed at how much simpler their life can be. You don’t need to buy a fancy filing cabinet, or spend a lot of money on files. Just simple color-coded hanging files will do, with manila folders inserted inside for subcategories. Once you have established a simple filing system, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to find all of those missing important papers and documents.

Danger of Stockpiling
One huge pitfall that I find people falling into is the stockpiling of items. I know it is cheaper to buy in bulk but you’ll need a place to store these items. If you don’t have a warehouse at home—don’t buy lots of “bulk” items. Remember, most canned and boxed food items do have an expiration date. “If you don’t have the space, then there is no place”. And always remember—“A coupon is only good if you need the item.”

You don’t need to be a “hoarder” to need the help of a Professional Organizer. In today’s busy world, taking the time to get organized or set up a new household is difficult. Sometimes it takes an outsider to be able to see the things that can be corrected or just tweeked a bit to make day-to-day life simpler. That’s where a professional organizer, such as myself, comes into play. One of the greatest reasons why people love professional organizers is because they don’t judge who you are as a person or how you keep your house. They only want to help you to find a peaceful place to come home to.
