Saving on AC Costs

in Tips & Thoughts

It’s getting hot outside! That’s what happens in mid June and July in KY. That means that the air conditioning unit is having to work harder and the energy bill is going to get higher. There are a few things we can all do to help our AC unit work more efficiently and cut down on the expense. These tips won’t save you thousands of dollars, but they will help.

Change your filters Traditional wisdom says change it every 4 weeks. I have it on my calendar as a recurring event so I don’t take a chance and forget. I’ve been known to end up forgetting for months at a time.

Have it serviced and maintained Most AC companies will offer a special price to come out and check the system at the beginning of the season. We have found it worth our money to pay for a service call at the start of the season to help us get through the summer months.

Keep debris away from the outside unit. I don’t have any official source of information on this, but it just makes sense – if there are leaves, debris and garbage around the unit, it will be harder for the unit to work.

R22 is more expensive If you have an older AC unit, you probably need to use R22 freon. This freon is now considered old and therefore more expensive. There may be monetary benefits to shelling out the money for a new system.

Whether you are looking for annual maintenance in Lexington, KY or need emergency Austin AC maintenance, follow these tips and maybe you can save some dollars!

Please realize that our unit is almost 20 years old, so I know we need to replace the unit. It’s on our list to do, but for now, we just replace our filter and keep our unit serviced and hope to make it one more year!
